Frequently Asked Questions

Therapy in Dublin 2

If you have never been to therapy before, it is normal to have questions before you pick up the phone. Here are the ones we are asked most often.

Do I need a referral to see a therapist?
No. You can contact a therapist directly and arrange a first appointment yourself. You do not need to see your GP first or be referred by anyone.
How much does a session cost?
Each therapist at The Iveagh Practice works independently and sets their own fee, so it is best to ask them directly — their contact details are on their profile page. If cost is a barrier, we also run a low cost therapy service with sessions from €35 to €50, depending on what you can afford.
How long is a session, and how often would I come?
Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes. Most people come weekly or fortnightly, at the same day and time each week, though that is something you and your therapist agree between you.
How do I choose the right therapist?
There is no single right answer, and most people go on a mixture of practical fit and instinct. Our Find a Therapist page lets you narrow things down by what kind of therapy you are looking for and which days and times suit you. It is also perfectly normal to contact two or three people before deciding.
What happens in the first session?
Usually it is a conversation rather than anything formal. Your therapist will want to understand what has brought you to therapy, what you would like help with and what you are hoping for. You will get a sense of how it feels to talk to them and if you feel comfortable, you can arrange to continue meeting with them. You are not committing to anything by going once.
Where are you, and is there parking?
We have two centres in Dublin city centre — 13 Fade Street, D02 RR22, and 37 Wexford Street, D02 F652. Both have excellent transport links, with paid parking close by and several car parks a few minutes away from Fade Street. Please note that the rooms are on the first, second and third floors, with access by stairs only — there is no lift.
What are your opening hours?
The centres are open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 10pm, and Friday to Sunday from 8am to 7pm. Individual therapists keep their own hours within that, so check with them what days and times they work.
Are the therapists qualified and insured?
Yes. The psychotherapists here are qualified practitioners who have successfully completed their training. They work independently from The Iveagh Practice. There are both accredited and pre-accredited therapists, and all the therapists have professional insurance. Sessions with pre-accredited therapists tend to be priced lower, so if cost is an issue this can be a good option. Each therapist lists their own qualifications and approach on their profile page.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential between you and your therapist, within the limits that their professional body sets out. Your therapist will explain how that works with them at the start, and it is a fair thing to ask about in a first session.
