Online Psychotherapy and Counselling, Dublin

In our Psychotherapy clinic we offer online therapy sessions to clients who may find it more convenient to see a counsellor online.

Online therapy became a common option for people during Covid, and it has stayed that way because it simply suits a lot of lives better. You may prefer to start with your counsellor online and move to face to face sessions at a later date, or depending on your circumstances it may suit you longer term to stay online.

For many online psychotherapy can be just as effective as in person counselling. All our psychotherapists and counsellors are highly trained and have a lot of experience with holding online sessions so you can get the support you need in difficult times in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Online counselling may be a more practical option for you, you don’t have to travel so it may suit you if you live in a remote area as the sessions can be more easily integrated into your schedule. If you live in a village, online counselling can give you more anonymity if you don’t wish to go to a local psychotherapist. It may feel less intimidating to speak to someone online rather than in person. For many it can be a good introduction and a way of getting comfortable with therapy before transitioning to in person counselling.

How it works

You contact the therapist you would like to see and agree a day and time between you. They will send you a link by email before the session. At the agreed time you click the link and the session begins, exactly as it would if you had walked into the room. Sessions are usually 50 to 60 minutes and most people come weekly or fortnightly.

You need a phone, tablet or laptop, a reasonable internet connection and somewhere you will not be overheard for the hour. Headphones help more than people expect, both for privacy and for the sense of the other person being in the room with you. Your therapist will tell you which video platform they use when you book.

Therapy anywhere in Ireland

Our therapists are based in Dublin city centre but they work online with clients all over Ireland, and with Irish clients living abroad. If you are outside Dublin, online therapy means you can work with an accredited Dublin therapist without the journey, and without being limited to whoever happens to be practising in your own town.

It matters in a small place. If the nearest counsellor is someone you would meet in the shop on a Saturday, that can be reason enough not to go at all. Online removes that problem entirely.

Who online therapy tends to suit

  • People living outside Dublin, or outside Ireland
  • Anyone whose work pattern makes a fixed weekly appointment in town difficult
  • Parents who cannot easily arrange childcare for an hour and a half
  • People who travel regularly for work
  • Anyone managing illness, fatigue or limited mobility — and worth knowing, our rooms are reached by stairs only, so online is the accessible option here
  • People who find the idea of walking into a therapy room daunting and want a gentler start
  • Anyone who wants more privacy than a small community allows

Is it as good as meeting in person?

For a great many people, yes. What makes therapy work is the relationship between you and your therapist, and that builds over video more readily than most people expect. Our therapists have been working this way for years now and are experienced at it, which is not a small thing — online is a skill of its own.

It does not suit everyone, and it suits some pieces of work less well than others. If you and your therapist find it is not right for you, moving to in-person sessions at either of our Dublin 2 centres is straightforward. Plenty of people mix the two, coming in when they can and going online when they cannot.

Fees, referrals and confidentiality

You do not need a referral and you do not need to see your GP first. Each therapist here works independently and sets their own fee, so ask them directly — contact details are on every profile page. If cost is a difficulty, we also run a low cost therapy service on a sliding scale.

An online session is as confidential as one in the room, within the same professional limits, and your therapist will explain how that works with them at the start. Our frequently asked questions page covers the practical questions people usually have before a first appointment.
